Wanderers Cricket Club
Welcome to a very late Grand Final edition of Wanderers WebNews and my apologies for the long delay. I’m still getting over our A Grade loss but ecstatic for the Reserve grade for their valiant victory. In the junior grades, our Under 14 Blue had a magnificent victory with coach Anto Wilson an extremely happy & proud person throughout the weekend. The under 12 Gold went down fighting but for them to manage to take out the Minor premiership was an outstanding feat in itself. And then there’s the Club Championship that we once again won, to with it back-to-back was even more pleasing and well done to all concerned.

We were also fortunate to have Ryan Dowson named as the Sam Scuderi Medal winner (Townsville Cricketer of the Year) and A Grade skipper Darren Frakes was named Queensland Country Player of the Year.

Before getting into other news, we have rescheduled this month’s club meeting to be held tonight owing to President Peter Wiltshire’s impending hip surgery later this week. At tonight’s meeting there will be proposed new formats for junior cricket to be discussed. It is vital that we have as much feedback as possible on these proposals, so please make the effort to attend tonight commencing at 7:00pm.

While the 2006 – 07 season is now officially over we will still be hosting some matches at Gill Park over the next 3 – 4 weeks. On Tuesday 24th, the Secondary Schoolboys Townsville final will be played at Gill Park between (I think) William Ross SHS & Ignatius Park College.

Then, on the May Day long-weekend we again will be hosting our northern neighbours Papua New Guinea as they prepare for their ICC matches with some warm-up matches against the Queensland Academy of Sport. For those who missed the PNG boys a few years ago, come along & watch and enjoy their great company.

There are still a few senior players that owe playing fees and these people will be advised by mail over the next week or so. Please make the effort to fulfill your financial obligations and ensure you are not placed on the Queensland Cricket unfinancial player database.

The machinery & storage shed is now almost 100% complete and most of our gear stored in there. If any junior coaches still have equipment bags in their possession please return them as soon as possible. This also applies to cricket balls that senior captains may have in their possession.

Below is the last of the team reports I received and during the off-season Wanderers WebNews will be produced at least monthly. If you have any news that you feel should be promoted throughout our club, please submit it to info@wandererscricket.com

Once again I would urge all our club-members & supporters to support where possible our esteemed sponsors whom, without their support we would struggle. I would also like to take this opportunity to say thanks to all those within Wanderers who volunteered any of their valuable time to ensure our club remains successful and probably the least expensive. Without your time & effort things would be much more expensive and we wouldn’t have progressed as far as we have – thank you all!

U10s Wanderers Brown vs Wanderers White thanks to Bob Lawn.

It was an all-Wanderers event when the U10 Browns met the U10 Whites at Pimlico. Browns captain Ryan Eaton won the toss and invited the Whites to bat first on the dewy outfield. The Whites got off to a fairly good start, ending their first session at 4/49. In reply, the Browns also made steady batting progress, ending their first session at 2/49, and leaving the match evenly poised at the halfway mark. In their second batting session, however, the Whites faced the best-ever bowling, fielding and catching performance by the Browns, at least in the last 2 seasons: 11 Whites wickets fell for the addition of only 38 runs. The highlight of the session was the last over, bowled by Jack Gusmeroli, who took 4/1 in the over, including a hat-trick from the last 3 balls of the session. In reply, the Browns added another 52 runs without loss, to end the day on 3/101, and so even the game score with the Whites 2:2 for the season.

For the Whites, batting honours were Sam Lanskey 11, Joseph Looby 10, Brendan Mills 8, Sam Kriesel 7, Jim Pasking 6, Joshua Parkinson 4*, Dylan De Bray 4 and Tyler Roberts 3*. Wickets takers for the Whites were Siddarth Roche 1/2, Sam Lanskey 1/2 and Braedon Griffiths 1/16 while Siddarth took their only catch. For the Browns, batting honours were Ryan Eaton 25*, Riley Heaver 13*, Craig Land 6*, Brendon Lund 5*, Michael Saunders 4* and Tori Lawn 3*. Wicket takers were Jack Gusmeroli 4/6, Lachlan Fanning 1/5, Craig Land 1/6, Kristofor Grant 1/8, Brendon Lund 1/8, Mark Land 1/8, Michael Saunders 1/9 and Tori Lawn 1/13. Run-outs were effected by Jack Gusmeroli (2), Michael Saunders/Riley Heaver (1), and Ryan Eaton (1), while catches were taken by Ryan Eaton, Brendon Lund and Michael Saunders.

Thanks to all the parents who assisted both teams during the season. Special thanks to Rhonda and Raymond Murphy, who put in a tremendous effort to organize a bar-b-que for both teams and their parents after the match. Despite the fact that both required hospital treatment after they had got the White team going in the match (Rhonda for a finger sliced while preparing the food before the match and Raymond for a pain-killing injection), Raymond manned the bar-b-que while Rhonda organized the table!

Under 12 Blue – thanks to David Eaton

This is our final match report for the season. On the 24th March 2007 we played Suburban Parks Redbacks and our captain was Hayden Bromham and vice captain Jared Sinclair. We lost the toss and Redbacks elected to bat. We commenced with some very steady bowling from Nicholas Bremher, Jack O’Reilly and Michael Corney and that steady bowling and a slow outfield kept the scoring relatively low. Everyone was a bit sleepy after watching 2 games of football on Friday night so a certain run out opportunity was missed early on and a couple of very difficult catches were also put down.
The pick of the bowlers in that session was Lachlan MacAnsh who clean bowled 2 of the Redbacks batsmen. Nicholas Bremher also hit the stumps for the third wicket for that session and at the end of 15 over Redbacks were 3/49.

Our opening batsmen of Harrison Bagley and Luke Pazenbock were very steady and took the score to approximately 20 before they were both retired. However once they retired the wickets tumbled and we lost 5 wickets in the space of 5 runs over a period of 3 overs. Angus Meikle and Jack O’Reilly stopped the slide and consolidated so that at the end of 15 overs we were 6/37. Redbacks had a bit of a strangle hold on the match at that point in time but some very good bowling from Hayden Bromham, Angus Meilkle and Luke Pazenbock kept runs to a minimum. We had our second stumping of the season with Lachlan MacAnsh whipping off the bails to give Jared Sinclair a wicket. Jared then effected a brilliant catch diving out stretched after chasing a high ball. He hung onto it and was genuinely congratulated by all his team mates for a great effort.

Luke Pazenbock took the final wicket of the innings hitting the stumps again and then chimed in with the last over of the innings to bowl a maiden over. At the end of their 30 overs Redbacks were 104 for the loss of 6 wickets. Best of the bowlers were Luke Pazenbock 1/2 off 3 overs, Lachlan MacAnsh 2/6, Andrew Squires 1/13, Nicholas Bremher 1/9 and Jaredd Sinclair 1/17.

With only 4 wickets left we needed a very good start to score the 68 needed to win the game. Steadier batting by Angus Meikle and Jack O’Reilly kept the score ticking over slowly but Angus Meikle struck a couple of nice 4’s that boosted the scoring rate. Angus retired and that lead to a little mini collapse with Jack being out bowled and Harrison Bagley coming into bat with Nicholas Bremher. Again steady runs were scored although at times it seems that they were going to be a long way behind the run rate. Eventually Harrison was bowled attempting to push the scoring along and then Luke Pazenbock having retired came in again and was caught trying to push the score along. This meant our last 2 batsmen were Angus Meikle and Nicholas Bremher. Between them they scored approximately 20 runs in 3 overs before needing 16 off the last over to win. Both batsman hit some very good shots but did not get value for their shots because of the long grass in the outfield. Unfortunately despite some big hitting the ball just did not seem to want to cross the boundary on enough occasions and we ultimately found ourselves 10 runs short of the Redbacks score. Our best batsmen were Angus on 22 not out and Nicholas on 20 not out. No other batsman reached double figures so well done to those boys.

This was our final game of the season and as a result we had a 7 wins 6 losses aggregate for the season.

Thank you to everybody for your enthusiasm and interest and enjoyment of the cricket throughout the year, I felt it was a great team effort from everybody. Thank you to Rohan Hensen, Paul Squires and Hannes Pazenbock for their contribution to the team during the season. Thank you to all other parents who helped out with organization and making sure kids were padded up etc during the course of the day.

I hope you all continue with your cricket careers next year whether it be in the under 14’s or under 12’s if you remain eligible.

Thank you also very much for the gift that I received at the presentation night. I greatly appreciated it. Also thank you to those parents that offered kind words. I  would like to offer my own congratulations to all the parents of the boys because they were all extremely well behaved and a pleasure to coach throughout the season.

All the best for the off season.
