Greetings all,

Wow! How does one report on the happenings at Wanderers this week.

I'll try and summarise and then go into more detail.

What a week for our former (now great) player Mitchell Johnson has had. Unless you've been living under a rock you would have seen or heard of Mitch's exploits in Perth taking 8 wickets in the first innings against South Africa and at the time of writing he now has 10 wickets for the match. Follow this link for an interesting article on Mitch that was in "The Age" the other day http://www.theage.com.au/news/sport/cricket/destiny-fulfilled-from-quiet-teen-to-pace-ace/2008/12/19/1229189890472.html

Now, let's talk about our A Grade who yesterday set a new benchmark in Townsville cricket in the most remarkable and enjoyable day of cricket I've had the pleasure of witnessing. It's hard to single out the best part of the day but Assad's remarkable innings of 209 (yes, that's 209) would be the first double century in Townsville cricket for over 20 years (the last I think was Sam Scuderi in '85-'86).

To watch this innings was amazing, it included 23 fours and 10 sixes and believe it or not was scored in a tad over two hours off only 142 balls. Skipper Patrick Hagenbach was at the other end farming the strike to Assad and amongst all the sixes & fours, Patrick scored 136 in a partnership of 280. As a storm approached late in the afternoon and both players suffering in the sultry conditions, Patrick engineered a very quick two, to ensure Assad could have his chance at his double century and he didn't disappoint. The threatening storm actually drifted  away to the east and both Assad and Patrick lost their wickets and both were physically drained by the sultry conditions.

Darren Frakes then had a quick-fire cameo of 77 off 66 balls in 53 minutes. Ryan Dowson (19 not out) and Lance Walsh (8 not out) took the final score past that magical and remarkable figure of 500, we finished at stumps  8/506 (yes 506). A score of 500+ is basically unheard of in Townsville Cricket and a figure I cannot recall in the past 20 years.

It must be remembered also that in the previous week of this match that Willie Gavera took 6 wickets and retired another player to basically set up this match for our batsmen to dominate.

I have attached the scorecard for those that want to get into the stats.

I'll attempt to get another WebNews out later this week with the details of our other senior matches and any other relevant news.

Take it easy!
