Welcome to the latest edition of Wanderers WebNews with the good news that it was a much improved weekend for the Mighty Wanderers Eagles with victories in all senior grades, the Under 14 Gold snared a rare outright victory, the Under 12 Gold had another good win as did the Under 10’s.
But before going into details there is news that next week’s monthly meeting has been changed to Wednesday 1st March commencing at 7:00pm at the clubhouse. This is a very important meeting as most of the planning for our junior & senior presentation of trophies will be done at this meeting.
As I write this WebNews, young A Grader Bradley Stout is in Alice Springs representing the Queensland Indigenous Cricket team, as we access any scores, we’ll keep you posted on his progress throughout the Imparja Cup tournament.
A surprise visitor to town this week is former A Grade skipper Paul (Meister) Gibb. Gibbo tells me he will probably be at the A Grade match this Saturday for those wishing to catch up with him.
Aussie Legends to play in Townsville:
Fishing, a bush dance and lots of cricket is on the agenda when a bunch of former cricketing greats, including Mark Taylor and Ian Healy, travel to outback Queensland next month.
The Players Own Legends Cricket Tour will travel to large regional centres, including Longreach, Mt Isa, Townsville and Yeppoon, promoting the sport through coaching clinics and fun matches against locals.
They will share tips and stories with cricket lovers and join in local activities to help raise money for local cricket clubs along the way.
Former Australian wicketkeeper and Brisbane boy Ian Healy said the tour was the first of what he hoped would be many to regional communities around the country.
"We're looking forward to visiting the more remote places like Longreach and Mt Isa and bringing cricket to the kids from the School of the Air," Healy said.
"It's great for the former players to be able to continue their association with the game by meeting people who love cricket and to share their knowledge with kids who dream of one day playing for their country."
Healy will be accompanied by former teammate and captain Mark Taylor, opening batsman and international coach Geoff Marsh, batsmen Doug Walters and Graeme Wood, as well as Terry Jenner, Greg 'Mo' Matthews, Colin Miller, Rodney Hogg, Len Pascoe and Peter Taylor.
The tour is organised by the new organisation Players Own, established by the Australian Cricketers Association as a commercial arm run by players for players.
The tour will visit Townsville on Saturday March 11th at Endeavour Park and will play a local side captained by Wanderers Darren Frakes with Wanderers legend Sam Scuderi appointed vice-captain..
A Grade were up against competition leaders Wests at their home ground and went into the weekend well positioned after have Wests bundled out for 129 in their first innings and we were recommencing our first innings at 0/50. Skipper Darren Frakes returned to his best scoring another century (118) before we declared at 3/182 and put Wests back into bat. Wests were again bundled out for under 130 (124) with Scott Connor bagging 4/10 off 8.2 overs, other wicket takers were Sean Death 2/23, Isaac Ling 1/10, Andrew Martel 1/17 & Ryan Dowson 1/28. According to Happy Gilmour, he pulled off a Andrew Symonds like run out. We needed about 70 off 6 overs to achieve a rare outright victory but fell short as the big hitters tried but lost 4 wickets in doing so. A very good result to Wanderers despite a couple of easy dropped chances and good points were gained to see our A Grade once again take over the top position in the A Grade competition. Unofficial points in A Grade after this round is Wanderers 71.36, Brothers 70.19, Wests 67.77, Saints 63.63, Sub Parks 57.84 & Norths 43.81.
Reserve Grade also had a good victory over Wests, in reply to Wests’ first innings of 154, our boys scored 225 with Darren Follington 43, Dave Coulson 34 not-out & Cameron Jordan 33. Chasing quick wickets with an outside chance of going for an outright victory, Wests dug in to finish the day at 5/152. Ray Daly took 3 wickets with Cameron Jordan & Jamie Heit each taking a wicket each. As we are unaware of other Reserve Grade results, we are quietly confident that our Reserve still lead the championship in this grade. Well done fellas.
Third Grade also had a solid victory but unfortunately I do not have access to the scorebook at the moment.
In the local derby at home between our two 4th grade teams, the 4ths No.2 had a narrow victory 145 – 131. 4ths No.2 Jason Hall laid the foundation for the victory with a fighting 64, Dan Gough 32 not out, Tony Hlevnjak 21 & Rob Heit 14 not out all chipped in. Best batting for the No.1 team was Rob Delany 31, Wayne Glase 28 not out & Barrie Emanuel 22. Bowling honours for the No.2 team was Dan Gough 3/24, Joel McNamara 2/15 & Gavin Maughan 2/31.
Wanderers U10 Brown Report, February 18, 2006
Wanderers U10 Brown met the Redbacks at Pimlico, for the most exciting match so far of the season. We won the toss, and Captain Jackson Ritchie elected to field, with the outfield still wet, and a hot and humid morning looming. At the end of their first 13, the Redbacks were 3/46, a reasonable score given the wet grass. The main highlight of the first session was a great over by 8-year-old Cathy (“Cathy Lee”) Lawn, who bowled two Redbacks out for a duck off consecutive balls to take her first wickets for Wanderers and end her over at 2/1. Michael Saunders (1/6) was the other wicket taker. In response, we were 2/37 at the halfway mark, making for an evenly poised game. Highlight of our batting was two sparkling fours off consecutive balls by Connor McGovern. The Redbacks batted slowly at the start of their second 13, but then took off, compiling 64 to end their day at 5/110. Wicket takers for Wanderers in the second half were Tori Lawn (1/8) and Darcy Cram (1/11). Jacko Gusmeroli held a spectacular diving catch (even better than the one he took against us last week to dismiss Vivian Wolfinden when subbing for Wanderers White) to earn a can of coke from the coach.
This left Wanderers 74 to win. We started slowly, with the fall of another two wickets. Then Vivian and Tori came together for an explosive 3.5 overs of big hitting by Vivian and nippy running between wickets by both. Vivian plundered 35 runs (including 4 sixes and a four) before he was required to retire, with Wanderers still 21 short of the Redbacks’ total. However, we still had 6.5 overs left and wickets in hand, and there was a throng of Wanderers’ batters on the sideline all keen to take on the Redbacks. Three more wickets fell in the chase, but we ended the day at 7/114, a narrow but exciting and well-earned victory. A feature of the day was that almost every Wanderers batter scored some runs, with Connor McGovern (10 n.o.), William Orreal (8 n.o.) Ryan Eaton (7), Riley Heaver (6 n.o.), Andrew Squires (4), Tori (4 n.o.), Michael (4 n.o.), Jackson (2 n.o.), Craig Land (2), Jacko (2) and Justin Macor (2). Keepers Jacko and Vivian allowed no byes, while our bowlers kept the extras down to 37.
12 Gold had another easy victory over Saints winning by 70 runs. Things looked a bit dodgey for awhile with the Wanderers 4/19 off 7 overs. Then a great partnership between Jacob Hope-Shackley and Jordan Bonner brought the score to 5/80. Jacob and Lachlan Kern continued on to bring up 6/151. Jacob Hope-Shackley 65, Jordan Bonner 26, Lachlan Kern 21. Once again a great display of bowling from David Dempster 3/9 off 5 overs, Jye Heytman 2/11 off 4, Sam Douglas 1/1 off 3,Jordan Bonner 1/17 off 4,Mitch Heaver 1/2 off 1, Adam McGovern 1/14 off 4 and Sam Rudge 1/11 off 4. Saints all out for 103 off 35.
The Wanderers second innings 2/50 off 16 overs. Jack Jeston not out 19 and Adam McGovern not out 11.
Under 14 Blue: Bit of a fizzer in general for the U14 Geniuses and Supremos.
U14 White started the day behind the eight ball and as much as the team tried the more it seemed to fall apart. We needed two wickets to clean up Wests’ tail but I am afraid they just wouldn’t come. The slippery ball proved difficult for the bowlers to handle and the fielders to hold on to. We dropped a couple of catches and bungled a run out or two but once the sleep cleared from their eyes the boys came alive and played well. Bowling honours for the day went to JJ Wayne with 2 for 15 off six over spread across the two innings and Luke who came good with some very tight bowling to their opener who up until that time had been carting us all over the park. Line and length!!!!
Our batting seemed to follow our fielding with a couple of rash shots and the odd bad call seeing us bundled out in the second dig for 85. Luke and Blair were the best on the day with the bat but couldn’t stop an outright defeat. Wests played well and us having only 8 players really did make it hard. As usual the call is heads up and into it next week hopefully with a bit of new blood from our U12 blue boys!!
The Brown Bombers started the arvo keen and in a very evenly poised game. The enthusiasm didn’t last long enough though and we found ourselves waxing and waning between good and evil. We let ourselves down in the field with some near misses causing disquiet and heads began to droop. The opposition ended up with 6 for 288 off their 56 overs. This doesn’t show the amount of times the ball beat the bat it was just that when it hit the bat it went! Our bowlers toiled long and hard with Pete and Wayne the pick of our quicks and Jack H the only bowler that had any joy bagging another couple of wickets to go with last weeks pair. Our batters then set to the task of catching what turned out to be too large a total. Each time we had a partnership started something seemed to go wrong! Their fielders did very well including a freak direct hit from the outfield that caught Wayne short of his ground. A moral victory did come our way when captain fantastic Loose (22 not out) and Wellington Boot (12 not out) survived the last 12 overs to see us through to the end of play without being all out. The 203 we scored would have been enough to win most games played this season but when you hit a dead spot nothing goes your way.
Again thank you for all the parents that helped with umping, scoring or just being there. The teams appreciate every minute you can give them.
The 14 Gold team had an outright win over Brothers Blue in their two-day match
Wanderers batted first on what looked to be a good pitch. We were struggling at 4/58 off 14 overs when a good partnership between Liam Hope-Shackley and David Gray took the Wanderers to 5/137 off 28. Total score 173 off 41 overs. This didn't look like it would be enough! Top scores Liam 61 not out, Matt Ahern 26, David Gray and Taylor Worth 28.
Brothers only managed 91 off 27 overs. So the decision was made to send them in to bat again and go for the out right win. Great bowling from Matty Ahern 4/12 off 6, Liam Hope-Shackley 3/15 off 7, Brett Hay 2/36 off 8 and Taylor Worth 1/8 off 5.
In the Brothers second innings they only managed 91 runs off 37 overs. Taylor Worth was the destroyer here taking 5/19 off 9. Well backed up by David Gray 2/17 off 5, Matthew 1/4 off 4 and Brett Hay 1/12 off 5.
This left the Wanderers 16 runs to win which they did easily before the end of the second over Grant Dilger 15 not out and David Gray 0 not out.
A special thankyou to Lachlan Gurr who stood in for an injured player . He also took a great catch to dismiss the very dangerous Alex Peters. Well done and thanks Lachie.
Also a big thankyou to Kurt Worth who sub fielded for us on the second day He put a great in the field and helped us out heaps.
I received this “spam” message from one of our former players & tireless worker Warren (Boondy) Kempshall. Warren was very instrumental in getting the earthworks done when we built the turf wicket 6-7 years ago and received no formal recognition for his many, many hours of hard work. Publishing his “spam” advertisement is one way I can repay his efforts of the past & I urge members to utilise his services as he is a very good worker.
