Message from Qld Cricket
What can I say about cricket this weekend, I think it will be a re-run of last weekend unfortunately. I have just been down to Fred Jacobson Oval & Gill Park and they have a lot of water still lying on top, the grass is very long and thick and you sink down about 15cm (6 inches).
I just received a call from TCI and except for the possibility of Cutheringa JUNIOR fields; there will be no senior or junior fixtures this weekend.
The In2Cricket session this Friday night has been cancelled (the kids would drown) and junior training is in serious doubt. I would suggest that juniors contact their coaches by phone or email to find out if their training is still on.
Saturday 28th February commencing at 7:00pm. Six people per team costing $10.00 per head. We are looking at probably a maximum of 15 teams so its important that your organise and pay for your team in advance to avoid disappointment. Nominations will close, at “close-of-business” on February 24th with payment then also.
Fees, once again I’m forced to remind a lot of you that your fees are in arrears. Quite a few of you have paid the initial $100 compulsory sign-on fee and not paid anymore. If this is you, then you still owe $300 as our fees this season are $400. You didn’t take advantage of any of the discounts that were offered for early payment and unless you have made an agreement with President Barrie, then you need to quickly start paying.
We are fortunate to have a surplus of players on our books at present and team selections will be scrutinised to ensure players who are financial get preference. You’ve been warned!
Wanderers’ Batting Caps have finally arrived and are now available for sale at the canteen for $15.00.
Wanderers’ Broad Brimmed Fielding Hats are also on sale at the canteen for $17.00
Goldfield Ashes has come & gone once again. Peter Gurr has written the following to bring you up to date of what happened and what is going to happen.
Hey the Goldfield Ashes are over but I can’t let the chance go by to let all the Wanderers faithful know how we went.
Well Friday started early for me picked up meat & ice from Wulguru meats at 6.30am enough about me.
Daniel Pearce an ex Wanderer junior towed the food trailer up for us this year last year he couldn’t drive up because he was too young to drive, how a year will change things.
We have had a good year this year at the Ashes with good numbers attending all four teams and full teams without driving around Charters early in the morn looking for players, which used to happen from time to time in the past. So with the amount of people to cater for it was impossible for me to do it on my own.
Thank fully I have a good family called Wanderers. Stan Huen from day one every year has always been there for the Ashes and me, thanks mate. My Mum & Dad who have come up for the last 4 years for their help, Anto for taking the job of collecting monies for game fees, staying fees and shirt fees plus playing in a side you are a legend. Humpo for running the A grade a job well done with the majority of players never playing A grade before, you try telling a 15 year old to get out there & have ago at them blokes & he looks out & their men looking back. Steve Jeston & Paul Squires for looking after their side, believe me they had a ball & have already booked for next year.
Thankyou very much to Shane (Turls) an ex ex ex junior Wanderer for looking after his side as per usual for the last 4 or so years. There is no need for anything more than a phone call to Turls to see if he’s right for players or not the week before the Ashes the usual response is” all sorted no worries” so easy to cater for with guys like him. His crew are excellent with help for anything just a question away.
Some special thanks now to some I think special Wanderers. Luke Torr for sweeping out the hall last day without being asked Daniel, Emma, Lachlan (M) Blair, Steven, Jack, Brad for washing up & drying all the dishes. Lachlan (G), Wayne & Zac for the bins being emptied in the skip on a daily basis. Marissa Edmondson for her nursing skills when Dave Gurr put his thumb not the onion through our club slicer on Sunday arvo nasty too I believe. David & Rita Gurr for all their work cooking making sandwiches for lunch & delivering them to the grounds for our teams, a great effort. Joy for her efforts in the cooking cleaning & giving the young ones a hurry up when they needed it the most, generally morning when they needed to be at their game. Shelly Squires & Shelly Jeston for their help in the prep & clean up at food times.
I didn’t get to see much cricket as I was running between games making sure players had all their gear drinks etc. What cricket I did see was good & everyone had a good time by all accounts. The
bonding that went on was unreal from old & young players it was good. Sledging was also superb, the problem being it was against their own players in true Wanderers tradition.
B1. I had the chance to watch Taylor Worth & Brad Searle hit 50’s together one run apart on the Sunday great partnership & great batting from both players. On the Monday Luke Torr in the 20/Twenty smashed a fine 53 not out, the team decided not to tell him of his 50 until the second last ball of the innings “yelling from the sidelines your on 49 Luke”, the next ball bowled was a dot ball, last ball was despatched high in the air & was dropped on the boundary at deep mid off. Now that’s the sort sledging pressure Wanderers are really good at you should have seen his face when told he past 50 the over before, funny stuff. Thankyou Stan for looking after this side, Stan umpired most of the games played by B1, he must of enjoyed it because when asked he didn’t want to be relieved. Some of the players complained about Stan laughing at them when they played a stupid shot or missed a sitter catch so he must have enjoyed himself. I’ve got it from a hot source that he was also sledging, thanks Emma.
B2, I didn’t get to any of their games but from around the BBQ I got the impression they enjoyed themselves. Turly’s side & the Jesto/ Squires side with Steven Squires playing morning & afternoon for both sides legend material. We had a ring-in I’ve been told, cost them a few VB’s for import player Skip (McGovern) they didn’t break the salary cap of a full six pack but went close. If I heard it 100 times, that it was the scissor steps taken by wicket keeper Jesto to take a catch behind the stumps 5 in all I think must of been a very slow ball or very small steps & Squire caught a ball right from the ball leaving the bat to going to hand. I don’t think anyone else did anything in their games, only them, that’s the feeling I got. No reports from Turls other than he could count his score for the 3 day’s on one hand they had a good time I know that.
A grade. Thanks to Hump for his work with this team of oldies, newy’s & little ones, sorry Zac, Talking of Zac, day one Zac claimed the wicket of two big name cricketers in Townsville, they had nothing on him, first to go was Pat Hagenbach (Wanderers a grade captain) & Burton sorry I don’t know his full name but he’s (Saints a grade captain) both are also rep players. Even the umpire was putting his hands on his head as they ball turned just missing the stumps on several occasions. Apart from the losses, this team was highly competitive old boys Eddo & Gweedo teamed up with middle aged Wiltshire, Lapham, C Ahern with the younger gen (y), the y I think, stands for y did we have them only kidding Moncrieff, Pearce, Mooney, Gurr, Holm, Darrell, M Ahern.
A sign of this getting larger is already a reality we have kids who wanted to come this year but we didn’t have a team for them to play in. That will not be the case next year we will have a better idea on who is coming up early & will nominate teams accordingly.
Baz, our fearless President has given the thumbs up for what follows.
Now we are going to start while the irons hot, 12 months in advance, we are going to set up a Ashes committee where we will be able to do things like raise funds for the Ashes also look at sponsorship for shirts most team captains have indicated they would like to help so let me know if you can help. Phone Peter Gurr 0417619740
Please ring the above number if you know some business who might like to be on our shirt for next years Ashes. Remember 44 players wore our shirts this year without counting sideline support, next year anything could happen.
First names already in for the committee are STEVEN JESTON, BRAD SEARLE, EMMA GURR, PETER GURR, PAUL SQUIRES, ANTO WILSON, JEMA, TURLS & STAN HUEN, these are the people up there that indicated they would like to be a part of this committee, more are welcome.
I believe we have 4 possible sponsors already eager to come on board. “Great news”
Any one wanting to ring me if they can’t make it if they have anything they want brought up please do so.
First meeting will be Sat 7th Feb 12.30pm at clubhouse just after juniors finish just before Reserves go on hopefully cricket will be on! Editor’s note – I doubt it very much L
Don’t forget I have now set up a Wanderers Cricket Club “Facebook” site. This will allow us to upload photos (you too can do this) of Wanderers’ players in action (or not).

Message from Qld Cricket’s Regional Manager
Hello All
Just making your club aware of Community Coach Training Course coming up, a great course that you must attend if you wish to utilise the Active After School Care avenue to recruit or run a In2Cricket (Have A Go) session at schools. Please especially pass this onto any players that are attending University or in Final years of High School as AASC runs 3.30pm – 5.30pm – with good money to be made whilst developing coaching skills
Thanks
Tony Hampson
If you need a copy of the enrolment form, please email me & I’ll send you one.
