Wanderers Cricket Club
Welcome once again to Wanderers WebNews with rain still dominating our skies. As we move to the resumption of junior fixtures this coming weekend I thought it maybe timely to remind you all of what you should do if you are not sure if cricket will be played on the day scheduled.

In some cases where it has been raining for days leading up to the weekend, Townsville Cricket may call off fixtures on Friday. If this does occur, it should be on the local television news and in Saturday’s Townsville Bulletin. However, most cricket is called off just prior to the commencement. From 6:00am on Saturday mornings you should listen to either ABC Radio (630AM) or 4TO (102.3FM) as they have proved the most reliable in years gone by. Please, do not ring the radio stations! Remember also that ABC Radio goes to their national news between 7:45 & 8:30am so there will be no local updates during these times. If we get time, we will upload any cancellations on the Wanderers Website on Saturday mornings. If you are in doubt, ring the clubhouse on 4725 8034 after 7:00am & we should be able to advise. If after all that you are still in doubt, turn up to your fixture.

Speaking of rain, last week’s Goldfield Ashes were cancelled after only one day’s play was possible. This was particularly disappointing to the B1 team of our up & coming youngsters who in the main, was their first Ashes experience. As tents were being erected around the Pony Club during Thursday afternoon, this provided quite a lot of comic relief to some of us spectators & sledgers. Some people just don’t learn do they, you would think you would give your new tent a trial run before fronting up in sight of your clubmates. I will not mention any names for fear of getting a Presidential glare from Poppa Smurf & family. These aforementioned tents certainly got a workout on Friday night as huge electrical storms sat over Charters Towers dumping about 60mm while providing a spectacular lightning show. However, despite the heavy rain, the day dawned quite fine and we were very surprised to find out that the whole carnival had been cancelled. Most of the 194 teams attending the Ashes were as surprised as us and went about organising their own matches. Our B1 (YoungGuns) & B2 (Mouldy Oldies) decided on a 30 over match. The Mouldy Oldies conjured up a win after some rather unfortunate skull-dudgery took place. The YoungGun’s coach committed treason by swapping sides but the highlight of the match was Peter Searle’s 30 overs of wicket-keeping & then a faultless display of batting to lead his Mouldy Oldies home. You may hear of some other scores, but if you haven’t read about them on here, then you should ignore them completely.

I believe we bid farewell to Isaac Ling from our A Grade who is moving to Brisbane for University. Isaac has been a tremendous asset to Wanderers since he joined us and has represented at most levels including Qld U/17 & Qld Secondary Schoolboys. I’m sure everyone would join with me in wishing Isaac every success in his future endeavours whether it be in cricket or elsewhere. Keep in touch mate, we’ll be keeping an eye on any of your cricketing exploits in the future. Good luck buddy.

Centenary Hotel raffle roster this week is 4th Grade No.1 Friday 4:30pm and
A Grade on Sunday at 12:30.

Good luck to everyone this weekend providing we get to play.
