With the wettest January for quite some time, there are already some cancellations that I can inform you of.

Firstly, the In2Cricket session this Friday night has been cancelled (the kids would drown) and junior training is in serious doubt. I would suggest that juniors contact their coaches by phone or email to find out if their training is still on.

As for junior fixtures this weekend, it is extremely doubtful although there has been NO OFFICIAL word as yet. If you haven’t heard by Saturday morning whether junior fixtures are on or not, the best advice is to listen to either 4TO (102.3 FM) or ABC NQ (630 AM) – please do not phone the radio stations.

A grade & Reserve grade fixtures for this weekend have already been cancelled. I have no information on the other senior grades as yet.

Saturday 28th February commencing at 7:00pm. Six people per team costing $10.00 per head. We are looking at probably a maximum of 15 teams so its important that your organise and pay for your team in advance to avoid disappointment. Nominations will close, at “close-of-business” on February 24th with payment then also.

Earlier this month our 4th Grade No.2 team had a historic victory and I forgot to publish the match summary that skipper John (Chicken Hawk) Newman submitted. My apologies guys, here is Chicken Hawk’s missive.

Happy New Year to all at Wanderers, hope we can win 4 premierships this year.

Well the 2nd 4th grade side played out at Brothers on Sunday the 18th and started off 2009 with our second win of the season. Led by the unflappable Bevan Buckley he steered the boys to a nail biting victory (112 TO 104). Great batting by new addition Ryan Chrisoffersen (24), Taylor Worth (19) and Scott Watson (18) posed a target of 112 to Brothers.

Batting conditions was not flat with a bit of moister on the wicket. Chris Ahern had great reflexes to defend a ball centimeters from his nose from one delivery, with Peter Worth getting one in the gonads that shorten him up a bit.

Brothers batted and they to struck the same problem with the wicket, but it took good line and length bowling from Rob Keith (3 - 16) Ryan Christoffersen (4 - 19) with Taylor, Chris and Troy Hindmarsh each taking a wicket. Although we won, it was starting to get away from us but some great catching in the outfield saved the day, with Taylor taking 3,Bevan and Scott Watson each with two, Emma Gurr and Andrew Moore with one to finish Brothers off.

With Nathan McLachlan and myself to have a run, and the numbers we have, the team will be picked at training, monies paid up and who is not picked for 3rd grade, if anyone has a better idea please put it forward.

Fly high

C. Hawk.

Did you realise that Wanderers have two current Queensland captains in our midst? Darren Frakes captained Queensland Country to an Australian Championship earlier this month. Next month Bradley Stout will captain the Queensland Indigenous team in Alice Springs in the Imparja Cup. (more on this in a future WebNews)

Fees, once again I’m forced to remind a lot of you that your fees are in arrears. Quite a few of you have paid the initial $100 compulsory sign-on fee and not paid anymore. If this is you, then you still owe $300 as our fees this season are $400. You didn’t take advantage of any of the discounts that were offered for early payment and unless you have made an agreement with President Barrie, then you need to quickly start paying.

We are fortunate to have a surplus of players on our books at present and team selections will be scrutinised to ensure players who are financial get preference. You’ve been warned!

Wanderers’ Batting Caps have finally arrived and are now available for sale at the canteen for $15.00.

Wanderers’ Broad Brimmed Fielding Hats are also on sale at the canteen for $17.00

As you would know by now, Terry Hooper senior passed away. Terry was a previous President of Wanderers and prior to that was President of Charters Towers Junior Cricket. Under Terry’s guidance, Charters Towers Junior Cricket expanded and became a force to reckon with. Terry was also a Life Member of North Queensland Junior Cricket.

Terry’s funeral will be held on Saturday morning 9:30 at the Woongarra Crematorium Chapel.

Our heart goes out to his wife Lyn, son Terence & daughter Hayley.
