Wanderers Cricket Club
WebNews July 26th 2005
Greetings all.

With the wet weather experienced last week we had to postpone the working bee but I know you’ve all been waiting for the new date & it is going to happen this Saturday (30th) commencing at 8:00am. It is vital that we get as many as possible to this working bee to ensure that our playing & training facilities are second to none in North Qld. Remember our adage “Wanderers will set the standards for the rest to follow”. So please, give up some of your time, bring along a shovel, rake, wheelbarrow, yourself and a mate and let us get it over with in the one day. If you cannot make it at 8:00am, we will be there for the most part of the day, so there shouldn’t be any excuses for not at least giving an hour or two of your time. In case anyone thinks otherwise, the above work will benefit both juniors & seniors!

The 2005-06 is drawing closer and so is our Annual General Meeting that is scheduled for Sunday 7th August commencing 9:00am at the clubhouse. We have a great club that has been built by hard work and tradition by many members both past & present. It is essential for the Club to survive and prosper that we have a strong and diverse administration. With that, I mean an administration that has representation from all facets of the club and people who have the desire to see this great club of ours succeed. Whether you are a senior player, senior player’s partner, junior parent or grandparent, past player or supporter the Club needs your involvement. Over the past few years, too much of the administration has been left in the hands of a dedicated few and these people need to have some of their workloads reduced or we face the prospect of losing them. At the Annual General Meeting all Executive positions are declared vacant and I know that we are actively seeking a new Secretary & Treasurer along with a senior registrar. On top of that, Wilma Winter has indicated that she will not be running the canteen this season so we will also be looking for a replacement(s) in that area. I fully realise that our Club has well over 50 volunteers (last season) through coaching, scoring, administration and generally helping out around the club but unless we get those vital roles mentioned above filled, we will struggle. The Treasurer’s position is ideal for someone wishing to expand their career prospects as the Club has now a new computer and the financial software package MYOB to assist in reporting. The Club will pay for whoever takes on this role to undertake a MYOB course. The Secretary’s role is also much reduced these days with our own club computer to keep track of correspondence etc. So please, lets get to the Annual General Meeting with a resolve that Wanderers will continue to not only survive but will continue to prosper. Your involvement is paramount!

The other major event happening soon is the SIGN-ON that will be held on Sunday 14th August at the clubhouse between 8:30am & 12noon. Most of you who played last season should have received in the post a Sign-On form. Please, if you are able to make it to the Sign-On, bring this form along fully completed as it will save valuable time on the day. If you cannot make it to the Sign-On on the day, please indicate by email or by posting your form back to us indicating your intention to play this coming season. It should be pointed out that in the coming season a new rule will enforced regarding player nomination forms and it is quite simple. If a prospective player or player’s parent has not filled in a nomination form, those players will not be allowed to play or train in any official training sessions or matches. These days of litigation and insurance has seen us having to take a very hard line in regards to having details of all players.

We are also looking at selling ground advertising around our turf wicket field. The concept will be released very shortly but I can tell you that for an outlay of approximately $500 a sponsor will receive 10 metres of ground advertising and we have about 300 metres that we can sell each season. Hopefully, we have a model set-up for all to see at either the Annual General Meeting or failing that at the Sign-On. We fervently believe this will be very popular and should sell out quickly.

For those following the exploits of former player Mitchell Johnson, I found this article below on the Qld Cricket site the other day.

JOHNSON SET FOR  INDIAN TOUR

XXXX Gold Queensland Bulls fast bowler Mitchell Johnson will step up his off-season preparations after being called into the AIS-Commonwealth Bank Cricket of Excellence team for its tour of India and Sri Lanka this month.

Johnson, 23, will join fellow Bulls squad member Nathan Reardon in the team for the three-week tour which will feature a mix of one-day and three-day games.
Reardon, a member of the 2005 CBCE scholarship intake, was recently awarded a Bulls rookie contract for the 2005-06 season.

It will not be the first trip to the sub-continent for Johnson, who attended the MRF Pace Bowling Academy in Chennai in 2001, and played in Sri Lanka during the 2000 World Youth Cup.

Johnson, who earned a Bulls contact for the 2005-06 season after courageously fighting back from stress fractures in his back, said he was looking forward to experiencing the different conditions on the sub-continent again.

It makes you think more about your bowling being on their wickets, he said on the eve of the team s departure tomorrow.

It will give me a chance to try a few things like working on cutting the ball a bit more and bowling with an old ball and maybe getting some reverse swing, Johnson said.

It s a lot of fun to play in places like India and Sri Lanka because they love their cricket and really get into the games.

The left-arm paceman will use the tour to gear up for the Bulls first playing opportunity the Suncorp Bulls Challenge in Rockhampton in September.

2005 CBCE tour of India and Sri Lanka, July 23 August 12: Peter Nevill (VIC), Carl Sandri (VIC), Aiden Blizzard (VIC), Clint McKay (VIC), Gary Putland (SA) Ken Skewes (SA), David Dawson (TAS), Dane Anderson (TAS), Stewart Heaney (ACT), Michael Shaw (ACT), Clint Heron (WA captain), Liam Davis (WA), Nathan Reardon (QLD), Mitchell Johnson (QLD).

That’s about all for now, please if you can, attend the working-bee this Saturday and please re-read the section above regarding your involvement with the administration of this great Club – WE NEED YOU!
