WebNews March 24th 2006
Greetings all!

It was certainly a busy weekend & early week here in North Queensland as Cyclone Larry was heading for the coast. Our thoughts & best wishes are with our northern neighbours that suffered the wrath of Cyclone Larry.

In the senior grades last week, A grade lost the initiative when they spilt numerous catches and now are chasing a formidable total of 287 for victory. Best bowling was Scott Connor 3/51, Ryan Dowson 3/53, Sean Death 2/33, Isaac Ling 2/34 & Andrew Martel 2/72. Our boys are now in a must win situation to ensure their minor premiership aspirations and the all important home grand final now that Brothers have already gained first innings points against Norths with an outright victory looming. C’mon fellas, if you want that home grand final you will all need to stand up and be counted.

Reserve Grade fared better against Saints restricting them to 238 on a ground that most thought would produce 300+. Evergreen skipper Craig (Rocket) Hallett collected 3/39, Steve Sheppard 2/32, Damien Meek was once again very economical with Ray Daley, Jamie Heit, Justin Tolley & Kingsley Grimshaw all picking up a wicket each.

Third Grade once again compiled a huge score of 9/363 against Norths at Gill Park. Damien Goad top scored with 89, Pockets Collins hit 77, Cameron Jordan 43, Scott Nosworthy chipped in with 30, at the close of play Rick Martel was 30 not-out along with Wayne Hudson 12 not-out.

4th Grade No.2 kept their semi-final chances alive by defeating Wests. Defending 104 we went on to make 3/135 with Rod Platz 42 not-out & Robbie Heit 38 not-out. In the bowling stakes Goughy took 4/23, Harms 3/8 & Gavin Maughan 2/14.

4th Grade No.1 also had a good victory but no scorecard is available.

We have a former junior player, Jarrod Bannister, currently representing Australia at the Commonwealth games in the Javelin. Our best wishes have been sent to him.

Once again a big thank-you to Carl Humphreys for his tireless work assisting with turf wicket & ground preparations, your efforts are really appreciated and takes a huge load off my weary legs.

A quick ‘get-well’ to Under 12 Blue – (Brown) player Ben Little who somehow managed to dive face-first into a concrete path at school yesterday. Ben had a fair amount of dental repair work done and will be unavailable for this weekend’s round. Benny, get better mate & I promise I will cease making fun of your speech pattern.

Wanderers U10 Brown Report

Wanderers U10 Browns met Wests White at Pimlico on Saturday, winning the toss and electing to field. Captain Tori Lawn led from the front, and had Wests’ opening batsman caught by Michael Saunders off the first ball of the match. Not to be outdone, Cathy (‘Cathy Lee’) Lawn bowled the replacement batsman with her first ball to have Wests 2 for 1 after 7 balls. Wests never really got back into stride. After some fairly tight Wanderers’ bowling, Riley Heaver delivered the first of two wicket maidens, followed by Andrew Squires who took the first of his two wickets. Then Cathy ‘Lee’ came back to take her second wicket, leaving Wests at the end of their first session on only 34 for the loss of 5. Led by Ryan Eaton and Jackson Ritchie, Wanderers went for their shots and knocked up 63 runs in reply, albeit for the loss of 6 wickets. In their second 13, Wests put on only another 30, for the loss of 3 more wickets, to end on 8/69. Wanderers quickly added the 7 runs needed to win, and then another 60, for the loss of only 2 more wickets, to finish on 8/130. Bowling for Wanderers: two wickets each to Riley, Cathy and Andrew and one each to Tori and Vivian Wolfinden. Batting honours: Ryan 25*, Jackson 15*, Vivian 10, Riley 10, Cathy 6* and Jack Gusmeroli 5. Michael, Tori, Jackson and Jack all earned a can of coke for a catch.

Wanderers U10 ‘Gold’ vs Charters Towers

A composite U10 ‘Gold’ team comprising 6 stalwarts from the Wanderers U10 Browns and 7 from the U10 Whites turned up on Sunday, obliging parents in tow, to host Charters Towers at Pimlico. All were keen as mustard to play, despite a hot day in the field on Saturday with normal club matches. Charters Towers won the toss and sent us in to bat. We started well, ably led by Captain Vivian Wolfinden, with support from Riley Heaver, Joseph Looby and Liam Cussens, to reach 54 after 10 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets. Then three quick wickets took a bit of the gloss off, and we ended our first session on 6/62. Charters Towers also started strongly, until Tori Lawn had their opening batsman caught by Vivian. In quick succession, Jackson Ritchie, Sam Kriesel, Harry Broome and Brendon Mills followed up with a wicket apiece, and Charters Towers were struggling at 5 for 27 at the end of their first session, still 35 behind. Wanderers then continued their dominance of the Charters Towers’ bowling, putting on another 57 runs for the loss of only 1 wicket, to end the match at 7/119. Charters Towers did better in their second session, but fell well short of the target, ending at 8/71. Best of the batting for Wanderers: Vivian 30*, Riley 22*, Liam 9*, Joseph 7 and Michael Saunders 5. Bowling for Wanderers: Tori, Jackson, Sam Kriesel, Harry, Brendon, and Sam Lansky 1 each, with run-outs effected by Riley and Sam Kriesel. Vivian, Joseph and Brendon (with a little help from Vivian) took catches to earn a can of coke from the coach. Coach was also delighted that we bowled only 14 (!!) wides for the whole match. A big ‘thank you’ to all the parents who came along and helped in many ways to make Charters Towers feel that their long bus ride was appreciated.

Wanderers White Under 12 Blue

18 March 06 Vs Saints Gold at Wulguru School

Hands up all of you who enjoyed the under 12’s Legends training session, it was great to see all the Wanderers shirts that warranted a mention in the closing speech by the event  organisers. Well done  to all Wanderers U12!  It’s great for the club.

Dane Wright on his return from injury was this weeks Captain and lead the boys to another close win against the competition leaders, Saints Gold, this now puts us at equal top on the ladder.

We lost the toss and Nathanial and Ricky opened up the batting with both boys having to retire after the team’s imposed 20 balls faced. We lost three quick wickets in the first innings with the first being Dane LBW. Jack hit some very powerful and fast drives unfortunately straight to the fielders.   We finished the first innings at 4/68 and felt competitive against the comp leaders. Saints opened confidently also clearing the boundary in their innings of 4/83.

It took until the 21st over until we reached Saints first innings score but we picked up the pace  with Paul Byrnes hitting 8 fours in  his innings of 42* and Jack hitting  20 runs fro m 4 consecutive balls in his innings of 43.  We finished all out in the 29th over for 147 runs.  Saints found scoring difficult in their 2nd innings due to some great bowling and committed fielding from the  Whites including  three consecutive  maiden overs.  Saints required   16 runs from the last 2 overs to win and were very determined, however not as determined as the Wanderers boys who were elated with the win.

The BOD award  (Best on Day) went to Jack Goodwin for this 43 comprising 3 sixes and 4 fours, and taking two-middle-stump-clean-bowled wickets for 20 runs in his 3 overs. Well done Jack.

Only two games to go with our last game against our brothers, Wanderers Brown, it will be a cracker!

Thanks to all of the under 12’s who turned up with little notice for a great day playing the Charters Towers teams.   Wanderers turned on a great display of batting with Paul Byrnes hitting 52 and Jack Goodwin 51. Paul being awarded the Man of the Match award by CT’s Coach. Luke Mills captained the side and he and Ricky bowled extremely accurately while Nathanial Gardiner kept wickets like a tiger.  The cloud cover provided by Cyclone Larry was a welcomed changed.

Tim Saunders, Adam Betts and Jesse played for the Gold team. Well done boys.

UNDER 12 GOLD

12 Gold lost to Sub Parks (again). They could only manage 70 runs off 32 overs. Jacob Hope-Shackley 8,David Dempster 11,Jesse Kirby-Jones 8, Mitch Heaver 7 and Sam Douglas 7 not out.

Thanks very much to Tim Saunders and Jesse Kirby-Jones who filled in for us as two players were away

UNDER 14 BLUE

HATTRICK who said HATTRICK?????

Squiggy did that’s who!!!!! A not so great day at the cricket for the Brown team ended in spectacular fashion with Squigy Sqires coming on for an over and removing the last 3 Brothers batsmen in three balls. Snick, caught behind; babbooska, there goes middle stump; snick, keeper’s got another one!!!!! It made up for an average day at the cricket otherwise.

Our batsmen were disorganised and we only managed 79 in 30 overs. Pete’s 28 could well have been more but for being tricked by an arm ball that bowled him around the legs. The team were not prepared for the game due to the game before going to the wire and the coach having to sort the score book out. The fielding and bowling were wayward at times but when it worked it worked well. Liam had a hand in four or 5 dismissals and he didn’t even get to bowl. Gurry and Peter toiled well with the ball and went past the edge with monotonous regularity ending up with a pair a piece…….now back to hat hattrick!!!!!!!

The White’s went a long way to securing a finals appearance with a solid win against the other Bros team. Bagsy (31) and Nick (52) put on a solid 86 run partnership at run a ball pace to start the innings off! Blair took offence about the Geoff Boycott comments the last time he batted and scored a good 19 with Aiden (11), Jack (14) and Duggan (10 not out) helping to compile a competitive 158.

Did I mention there were only 7 players? The field seemed almost deserted when we went to field and the batters seemed to hit a purple patch for a while until it started to click for us. Nick (2 for 19), and Sean (2 for 17) kept to their guns and wickets began to tumble. Then………Who said Jack the Riddler couldn’t bowl???? Our Whites’ keeper came out from behind the stumps to roll the arm over and snared 2 for 4 off 2 overs to finish the Fish off for 133. An auspicious victory, given that Bros White were vying for the other second spot on the table and we only had 7 blokes. GUTS effort!!

Thanks to the wonderful handful of parents that do all the work for me particularly “chicken scratcher” Stu, Mark “That’s 4 Anton” Bagley and Bobbie Lawn.

UNDER 14 GOLD

14 Gold had a huge win over Norths on Saturday scoring 286 off 35 overs. Matthew Ahern made a century off just 71 balls followed by good scores from Brett hay 73 and Liam Hope-Shackley 55 off 28 balls. The final score was 5/286.

Norths were all out for 64 off 28 overs. Elizabeth Haines had a great day taking 3/18 off 5 overs. Taylor Worth 2/16 off 5, Mitchell Dawson 2/9 off 5, Brett Hay 2/3 off 5 and Wayne Darrell 1/3 off 4.
Thanks to Jacob Hope-Shackley who sub fielded for us. Great job Jacob!

Under 16 Gold Match Report From One Happy Coach

After winning the toss Captain Searley (Bradley Searle) decided to bat. In went our openers Thomo (James Thompson) & Tall (Daniel Pearce). Tall departed the centre wicket bowled early for a duck not a golden though. Then came Chippy (Ashley O’Sullivan) he departed early also bowled for a golden duck things were shaping up to be our usual effort of not many runs. Then Gertzy (Adrian Gertz) came to the crease & consolidated with Thomo until Thomo departed caught on 12. Searley then come to the crease & Gertzy  & him showed some good form until brad was bowled on 15. We had what can only be called as worse collapse than our top order. The Towers bowler was rewarded with a hat trick with Sid (Sadish) caught on 0, Sean Barret bowled for 0 and Torry (Luke Torr) with his usual bowled for 0. I wish he’d bat like he does in the nets a good batter with no luck. At this stage poor Gertzy must have been worried he was going to be stranded at the centre, in come James Banu with his usual style hit everything bowled at you as hard as you can regardless of were it’s pitched Adrian got on strike & must of thought I better get a few before they all depart on me & got himself out caught a few overs latter on 45 with 16 runs of one over. Then come Josh Cantrell to the crease with the same batting style as Banu who made a quick fire 10 of about the same amount of deliveries Josh was out bowled. Youngy (Andrew Young) come to the crease with two overs to go and surprised himself by blocking out the first over. Banu then took a quick single off the first ball of the last over much to the disgust of Youngy who then had to face the last 5 balls he did that not with ease but he did it. Banu 16 not out Youngy 0 not out, we finished with the score at 117 a very pleased coach we finally batted all of our allotted overs.
Our turn to bowl we started of slow but rapidly changed things around we are a good fielding side our batting generally lets us down with not enough runs made to defend.

Bowling figures
Sid (Sadish) 1 for 17 off 7 overs
Tall (Daniel) 0 for 19 off 7 overs
Thomo (James) 3 for 10 off 7 overs
Banu (James) 1 for 33 off 7 overs
Gertzy (Adrian) 1 for 21 off 5 overs
Sean Barret 2 for 1 off 4 balls bowled
Run outs
Searley got 1 run out.
Youngy got 1 this run out from Youngy changed the whole game he threw the ball in from the boundary at long on and took middle stump out to remove one of their last good bats it lifted the whole side. At drinks after the 17th over our players realised they were in with a chance of defending their score as the Towers had mustered the score of 54 at the same stage in the game we were 51.
They went back out fired up Searley took a good catch so did Thomo. Banu took a screamer in no man’s land some where behind 2nd slip half way to the boundary obviously put himself there for that reason. Josh took a very high catch at cover/point; Sean Barrett was also contesting the ball until someone on the field yelled “leave it to buckets”, as the team knows Josh. The last wicket fell to a great catch from Chippy at deep extra cover the ball had snow on it, at training he can’t catch the high ball but as he put it to his team mates “ If I had of dropped that I would of kicked my own head in before any of use guys got close to me”. From a coaches point of view I umpired the last 18 overs & every wicket I went up like the Toyota add as well I couldn’t help punching the air a couple of times. I’m sure after Thomo’s 3RD wicket he bowled a yard or two quicker standing at square with Tall & him saying to me “how quicks that”. Now that we have won 1, next week is our last game against Subs now we know how to win lets get pumped up & carry on from this. Peter Searle has a theory though about the win Jenny Searle had to go at the drinks break so he had to score & Noel Gertz was not feeling well so I had to umpire & Emma wasn’t there. So he thinks if I score first 17 & he umpires then at drinks we swap & I leave Emma home we’ll win the next one too. Well it was the only changes made to the side good theory Peter but we don’t want to ruffle any feathers at this late stage of the season. Sorry Walshy this is so long but we’ve had nothing two crow about this season so far but we’re crowing now or what sound does an eagle make. SEE YOU ALL AT THE EAGLES NEST GO THE MIGHTY WANDERERS. GOOD ON YOU BOYS GREAT EFFORT FOR A GREAT REWARD
