Hi Fellas,- Well its that time of the year again when the Cancer Council Qld campaigns against cancer with the relay for life – This event is held at the Sports Reserve Nth Ward on Sat 30th – Sun 31st May. It is a great opportunity for us all to get together and have a great time – whilst raising money for and remembering friends and family who have passed, are receiving treatment, or who have been cured It would be wonderful if Wanderers could enter a team in this event.

If interested please contact Sue Riley (aka NutGrass) 0747886006 or Mob 0408199183.In 2006 I entered a team which Fred and Andrea Jacobson were part of – Fred walked all night. Hoping you can be part of this great event. Let’s get behind this & do it in Fred’s memory.

IMORTANT JUNIOR NEWS from David Eaton

Rule Changes – Townsville Cricket are reviewing their junior match guidelines and rules in the off season and if anybody has any proposals they wish to make to TCI regarding rule changes then they should put those proposals in writing and then provide them to Ross Goodwin or David Eaton so they can be processed through our Club and then handed to TCI if accepted.  TCI will consider these matters at their Meeting in May so the Junior Committee want to have these submissions in no later than the 6th April

The TCI Presentation Night has been changed to Saturday the 4th April 2009 and will be held outside the Wanderers Clubhouse starting from approximately 5.30pm.  It would be good to have as many players and parents attend to watch grand finals that will be held at Gill Park, as I’m sure Wanderers Club will be in some of those.

Expressions of interest for any Under 14, Under 16 players who would like to complete umpiring courses to contact Ross Goodwin, Rohan Henson or Dave Eaton as TCI are trying to obtain some funding to allow these kids to get the benefit of umpiring courses.  Any parents who would be interested in doing umpiring courses can also put their names down and we will let them know when the courses are going to be undertaken. TCI are hoping to be able to utilise the services of Under 16 players next season to umpire Under 12 and Under 14 Gold matches.  They will be paid for their services and it might be good pocket money for kids if they wanted to participate.

NQ Junior Cricket will hold their NQ Junior Cricket Camp again and the preferred dates are 27th and 28thJune 2009 in Charters Towers. The camp is open to all junior cricketers of all standards.  I understand NQ Cricket will organise buses to Charters Towers and coaching will be available for the weekend and accommodation provided at a boarding school.  Further details are to come.

Winter Cricket - Last year junior players and parents would be aware that our Club ran a Winter 20/20 Comp.  This year the current coaching group will not be in a position to be able to organise and run such a competition.  If there are any parents or former players and members who would be able to assist in the organising of a 20/20 competition over the Winter months then please make yourselves known to either Ross Goodwin or Ray Murphy.  If there is no interest from within the Club then there may be no 20/20 over Winter.  TCI are also looking at running it if Wanderers do not but again they also require assistance to be able to run it.  The current TCI Junior Committee will not be in a position to run it without major help from parents or former players.  Any interest in assisting in running the competition would be appreciated if you could contact either Ross or Ray.

Wanderers U10 Brown Match Reports

Cutheringa, Saturday 14th

Ten players took the field against Wests, including Adam Munro who played until he had a doctor’s appointment. Captain Kelly Hvlenjak won the toss and elected to field first to avoid the heat later in the day. Cathy Lawn and Brendan Eaton opened the bowling tightly, conceding only a run each. Harrison Muller struck the first blow, running out a Wests player, quickly followed by Kelly who bowled another tight over and took another wicket. Then Tom Chappell effected a runout, and following a tight over by Adam Matthews and a maiden by Tom, at the end of 5 overs Wests were looking shaky at 3/5. Wanderers then let Wests off the hook a bit, with too many wides, and by the end of their first 11 overs Wests reached 37 without further loss. In reply, Wanderers struggled against tight Wests’ bowling, reaching 28 for the loss of 3 wickets. In Wests’ second 11 overs, Wanderers were down to only 9 fielders and Wests hit their stride, putting on another 61 runs for the loss of only 1 more wicket, caught Tom bowled Kelly. In their second batting session, Wanderers tried valiantly to catch the Wests total - with a great innings by Tom, ably supported by Cathy, Kelly and Brendan Eaton - but fell 18 runs short. Batting scores: Tom 26*, Cathy 5*, Kelly 4*, Brendan 3*, Jordan Davis 2*, and Mackenzie Bagley 1. Kelly was the only bowler to take wickets, ending with 2/9 off 3 overs. In all, it was a good team effort especially given the limited numbers.

Charters Towers, Sunday 15th

Seven Wanderers U10 Brown players, Tom Chappell (C), Joshua Eaton (V-C), Brendan Eaton, Jordan Davis, Cathy Lawn (K1), Adam Matthews and Harrison Muller, got up with the sparrows and made the trek to the Towers on Sunday. They were joined by Cameron Murphy (K2) from the U10 White team and Matthew Muller, spectator brother of Harrison, bringing the numbers to nine. In addition, four CT players, Daniel Weston, Reece Bartlett, Ned Mitchell and Jamie Watson sportingly stepped forward to play for Wanderers. Wanderers batted first and at the end of 15 overs, were 4/78, thanks to a strong captain’s knock by Tom, supported by Cameron 7, Joshua 6, Matthew 4 and Brendan 4. In reply, CT powered ahead, to end their first 15 overs at 2/121. Daniel figured in both CT dismissals, catching one of his erstwhile teammates off Matthew’s bowling, and having another caught behind by Cathy. In their second innings, Wanderers advanced their score to 7/158, again thanks to strong batting by Tom, who retired 50*, with support from Daniel 5*, Adam 4* and Cathy 3. This left CT with a target of 38 to win, which they reached in 5 more overs, for the loss of only 1 more wicket. That wicket fell to a blinder of a catch by Cathy at deep square leg, off Jamie’s bowling. The game decided, CT hit out in their last 10 overs, putting on another 57 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, to end at 10/216. CT wickets to fall in this last session: 2 x caught & bowled Tom, 1 x caught & bowled Matthew, 2 bowled Jamie, 1 bowled Cathy caught Tom, and 1 team run out. Best player awards for the day went to Clayton Lauder for CT and Tom who led from the front all day for Wanderers.

Dave Eaton writes - on the 14th March our Under 12 Gold side played a fixture against Brothers.

Black armbands were worn by the players as a mark of respect in memory of departed life member Graham Humphries. After the game a minutes silence was held by both teams.

Brothers needed to beat us to remain in hunt for the finals and when they won the toss they elected to bat. Our opening bowlers Josh Parkinson and Riley Heaver bowled very steadily but our first wicket was a run out after a fine throw from Daine McDonald from half way to the mid on boundary back to the bowler’s end which caught the batsman short. Our next wicket was the other Brothers’ opener who was caught by keeper, Ryan Eaton, down the leg side with the ball deflecting off the glove. After ten overs Brothers were 2 for 22 and our fielding was excellent and the bowling accurate. Daine McDonald bowled very well for three overs and Riley Heaver’s four overs were economical. Will Orreal then entered the attack and had immediate success in his first over when Brothers’ most aggressive batsman skyed a ball to the ever reliable Riley Heaver. Will in his second over then enticed the batsman to play a pull shot which was also ricocheted off his gloves and Ryan took his second catch of the match. Isaac Reeves then bowled back to back maidens with his miserly off spin before Jack Gusmeroli came into the attack and bowled the perfect yorker which ripped through the batsman’s stumps. Joshua Evans took over the keeping duties and Ryan Eaton came into the attack and had immediate success in his first over when the batsman edged a ball to gully where Daine McDonald took a very sharp chance in front of his face showing lightening quick reflexes to avoid a busted nose. Captain Sam Lanskey brought himself on and had immediate success with a LBW decision going his way before rattling the stumps on two further occasions. Jacob Matthews wrapped up the tail thanks to a simple catch to Ryan in the field. Brothers had been bowled out for 94 in 33 overs. Pick of the bowling figures were Sam Lanskey at 3 for 3, Will Orreal 2 for 12, Josh Parkinson 1 for 5, Jack Gusmeroli 1 for 10, Jacob Matthews 1 for 10, Ryan Eaton 1 for 11, Daine McDonald 0 for 5.

The opening partnership between Jack Gusmeroli and Ryan Eaton lasted four overs but they scored at 4 an over for that time before Jack mistimed a drive to mid off and was caught. Ryan and Jacob Matthews then consolidated and both scored consistently before ultimately Ryan was out caught hitting a tired shot to cover for a well made 26. Jacob and Sam Lanskey continued to score well, particularly Jacob becoming more aggressive and he was eventually out caught trying to knock the spin bowler over the infield. At 3 for 73 after 17 overs Isaac Reeves came to the crease one over before drinks. Isaac made immediate efforts to get off the mark and was lucky to survive a dropped catch the last ball before drinks. After drinks Isaac went on a hitting spree and in a two over period hit five fours. The win then secured Sam Lanskey was bowled trying to hit out and this brought Joshua Evans to the crease. Joshua was at his aggressive best and took to the Brothers’ bowling in a fine display of shot making. He and Isaac matched each other boundary for boundary as they put the Brothers’ attack to the sword. Isaac eventually retired on 45 from 41 balls bringing Will Orreal to the crease. Joshua Evans continued his onslaught and finished the 35 overs on 54 not out off 42 balls. Will Orreal was not out on 8 after 8 balls.

This was a much better effort with the bat and showed how we should be trying to play the game in a controlled but aggressive fashion. We finished at 4 for 194 off our 35 overs.

This was a comprehensive performance which secured our place in the grand final on Saturday 4th April.

Ultimately 11 Wanderers players matched up against 13 Charters Towers’ players. Wanderers won the toss and elected to bowl and what followed was a devastating spell of bowling by all the Wanderers bowlers. The main destroyer in his first two overs was Sam Lanskey who had the miraculous figures of 2 overs, 1 maiden, 5 for 1. He was supported at the other end by Daine MacDonald who had figures of 2 overs, 2 for 2 before other players took on the bowling duties. After bowling Charters Towers out so early we agreed they could bat again to allow all our bowlers to get some experience on the wonderful turf wickets that were provided by our Charters Towers hosts. At the end of the 36 overs Charters Towers had lost 22 wickets for 64 runs. Sam Lanskey had the fine figures of 6 wickets for 1 run off 4 overs, Ryan Eaton had 4 wickets for 6 runs off 4 overs, Daine McDonald 3 for 6, Harry Broom 2 for 6 and there were single wicket contributions by Joshua Parkinson, Victoria Lawn and Isaac Reeves. There were catches to Sam Kreisal, Harry Broom and Ryan Eaton and a very good caught and bowled by Daine MacDonald. There were also 2 run outs one of which was a direct hit by Jesse Grunske from fine leg. The umpire also denied Jesse Grunske a wicket with a very dubious no ball call and can only apologise to Jesse. Sorry mate.

Wanderers in reply made a very solid start and were none for 9 at the second over before Harry Broom missed one and lost his stumps. The turf wicket was playing true but low so cross bat shots became dangerous if the ball pitched on the stumps. Daine McDonald and Sam Kreisal then took the score to 27 before Daine was bowled. Jesse Grunske then proceeded to make his top score for the season with a well made 12 and Joshua Parkinson contributed his regular couple to the score before also losing his stumps. First five wickets down were all cleaned bowled which shows the need to get in behind the ball on turf and play your crossed bat shots for those loose deliveries off the stumps. Sam Lanskey and Ryan Eaton then cemented the win before Sam retired on 18 off his 35 balls faced. Tori Lawn came and went at the crease before Ryan Eaton combined with Joshua Evans for an excellent partnership the highlight of which was some energy sapping running between the wickets including plenty of twos and two threes. Joshua Evans showed excellent judgment running between the wickets calling numerous singles and second runs and it was amazing to hear Ryan Eaton tell Joshua to “stop running”. The partnership ended when Ryan retired having scored 27 from 35 balls. Will Orreal joined Joshua and Joshua continued his amazing form for the weekend smashing 64 off 35 balls including two sixes and six fours before retiring. Isaac Reeves and Will Orreal continued the aerial assault and Isaac continued his run of luck after being dropped five times by Brothers he was dropped four times by Charters Towers and at the end of the 36 overs both Will and Isaac were on 15 off 15 balls each faced.

Wanderers finished at 6 for 218 and although the score was lopsided Charters Towers never gave up the fight and continued to look for wickets.

Sam Lanskey was named man of the match for his fine bowling efforts which effectively won the match before it barely got started.

Wanderer's U14 Brown -v- Beaches

Due to work commitments I haven't been able to submit a match report for some weeks.  I think I've spent more time out of town than I have in Townsville, here is this week's report.

Wanderer's won the toss (very rare occasion) and elected to bat.  We sent our openers Lachlan and Ben out to the middle.  Both boys started well looking for the singles and twos and running well between the wickets.  Ben was first to go being caught on 10 which brought Sam to the crease.  Both Lachlan and Sam continued to score well with Lachlan hitting three 4's in a row before retiring on 24 not out.  Hayden joined Sam and the run rate continued to flow before Sam was retired on 20. Aaron Wilson, our form batsman came in at no. 5 and after a tentative start began to obliterate Beaches bowling team, smashing 4's and 6's as well as taking the odd single and two.  Hayden who had been taking a support role retired on 9 which brought Ryan to the crease who saw Aaron's form and enthusiasm began to attack the bowling in a similar way.  Both Ryan and Aaron ran well between the wickets and struck any loose ball to the boundary.  Ryan was retired on 24 and Riley came to the crease taking up where Ryan had left off.  Riley punished the bowling hitting a number of 4's and one 6 which was outstanding considering Riley was an U12 facing U14 bowlers, Aaron doing likewise at the other end.  Aaron having previously been retired early was allowed to continue past the coaches mandatory 25 balls in the hope his elusive hundred would come.  Riley pushing the run rate at the coaches will was eventually bowled for 27 off 16 balls which was an outstanding effort.  This brought "Pirate Miekle" to the crease who wanted to get in on the action having soundly hit the ball almost all the way to the boundary but only obtaining one run Angus lined up a loopy ball special which he top edged into the air and was caught on 1.  Nathaniel was next out and with only a few overs to go pushed the run rate whacking three 4's and one 6 whilst also taking the quick single to get Aaron on strike as the overs were running out and we all wanted to see Aaron get his tonne.  At this time both umpires thought the mandatory 35 overs had been completed which left Aaron on 93 not out only to be told by the scorers that there was still another three overs to be bowled.  With this Aaron let loose and brought up his hundred with a 6 over mid off and at the end of the over Aaron was retired on 107 not out which brought Ashley out to the middle and after another over Wanderer's completed their innings 3/273.

With a good total under our belt our boys were as keen as mustard to take the field.  Opening bowlers were Cameron and Ben and both boys tied down Beaches opener's.  Cameron was first to strike bowling one of the openers in his second over and Beaches were 1/3.  Next over Ben also took a wicket due to a fine catch by Lachlan and Beaches were now struggling at 2/11.  Lachlan's efforts in the field were soon to pay off again with an excellent throw from square leg which saw another Beaches wicket fall due to a run out.  Our next two bowlers were Lachlan and Hayden both of whom obtained a wicket in their first overs at which time Beaches were really struggling at 5/22.  Further excellent fielding by Ryan saw another run out at the striker's end and Beaches were now 6/22.  Our next two bowlers Angus and Aaron polished off the tail end, Angus taking the season's best with his spin bowling 2 wickets for 1 run.  Beaches were all out for 47.

Outstanding performances for the game were Aaron 107 not out off 62 balls, Riley Heaver 27 off 16, both Ryan and Lachlan not out 24, Nathaniel not out 23 off 12 and Sam Lanskey not out 20.  Bowling wise we had Angus 2/1, Ben 1/1, Lachlan 1/8, Hayden 1/9 and Cameron 1/15.

Thank you to the U12's again for filling in, I know you enjoyed yourselves and you all played extremely well, but the most outstanding performance of the day must go to Aaron.  Well done boys on an excellent performance.

Under 16 Blue Grade – Brown / White Report

This week was a clash of Mate Against Mate, Club Against Club and Wanderers Against Wanderers in another almighty clash deserving top billing for the week.

White won the toss and elected to bat leaving Brown to field in the heat of the day so it was a good toss to win. The first two batters to enter the cauldron were Adam ‘Lucky’ McGovern and Dane ‘Sharkbait’ Wright. They were facing a fired up pair of bowlers in Phillip English and Ricky Hlevnjak with Ricky opening the bowling first. In came the thunderbolts with Adam ducking and weaving but getting through the over unscathed and Phillip opened up with a similar over only quicker at the other end. The boys knew they were in for a tough but were equally determined to return the favour to the Browns.

As the thunderbolts were flying a small bit of shrapnel took the top of Adam’s stumps as Adam cursed his luck as he departed with no score. Enter Mitch Heaver who was next to enter the battle and everyone could see it was going to be a battle in every sense of the word. Mitch looked comfortable straight away as he and ‘Sharkbait’ set about making a crucial partnership. The new bowlers Stannis Agita and Lachlan Meikle were finding it extremely difficult to get through the ‘Sharkbait’ defence until Stannis bowled a corker of a delivery that sent the bails tumbling and ‘Sharkbait’ back to the pavilion for 3. White was 2 for 16 at this point David Dempster coming to the crease with the view of taking on the bowling attack.

While David took a little while to get off the mark, Mitch at the other end was now getting some runs to flow when he tried to drive a ball from George Dalton who just came on to replace Stannis. It was lofted and Stannis made enormous ground and diving face first at the ball caught it millimetres above the turf hurting his finger in the process. It was now 3 for 33 and White looking a little down. Josh Sillis, captaining the side, strode out with purpose as he was about to stop the rot and build a score. Unfortunately for White, David Dempster was caught behind by a nice off spinner from stand in Captain for the Browns, Lachlan Miller and that made the score 4 for 33. This was to be the end of the wicket taking for the Brown Team as the new batsman Nathan ‘Dondo’ Donaldson and Josh set about delivering the ‘Last Stand’ as they were blasted by the bowling attack for the remaining 21 overs of Whites innings.

White ended up with 94 after 35 overs in a gritty performance from Dondo and Josh with Josh hitting 2 fours and a six in his last three balls to take him to 30 and Dondo finished up with 17.

Next it was Browns turn to bat and the White team was itching to give a little payback. George Dalton and Ryan Agita opened the batting and were immediately under fire from a pumped up Dondo and Josh Sillis. Dondo exploded out of the blocks and after a close LBW appeal George was bowled off the pads for 2. Brown was 1 for 2 and looking shaky. Phillip English came to the crease and after a brief discussion with Ryan set about building a partnership. They were both being pounded by a very good attack and could only manage singles and doubles off the bat as the bowling was tight and furious.

A change of bowling saw David Dempster and Mitch Heaver came on to bowl and they continued with some very good bowling. Phillip was caught by Lucky off David’s bowling when he was on 21 trying to increase the tempo and the score was 2 for 47. Lachlan Miller strode to the crease looking to score a big total to end the Whites hopes of winning. Ryan lost his head for a moment and went to dispatch David to the 85 metre boundary except he missed and was clean bowled. Brown were now starting to look a little stressed (at least the coach certainly was) at 3 for 49. Stannis Agita joined Lachlan Miller at the crease and was looking a to push the score but it was Lachlan that went for it but he was caught by a sensational caught and bowled by Mitch diving to his left to catch it below his knees. Brown were now 4 for 59 and the 94 White scored was looking a massive total.

Stannis and Ron showed great resolve and took the score to 94, equal with White when Ron was bowled by yet another superb delivery from David. David was fast becoming the Brown destroyer with bowling figures of 3-15 at that point. Lachlan Meikle was next in and was in great form with the bat as it took him only 2 balls to get off the mark. Both batsmen decided that since they had past the White total they would really go for it and the running between the wickets was first class. Stannis decided that it was time to unleash and that he did with great support from Lachlan Meikle. From the beginning of the 28th over the pair put on 79 runs off 8 overs and were not out at the end in a truly inspiring batting performance. Stannis ended up on 70 and Lachlan 29, well done boys.

White Batting: Josh Sillis 30, Nathan Donaldson 17 and Mitch Heaver 13.

White Bowling: David Dempster 3-17, Nathan Donaldson 1-22 and Mitch Heaver 1-26.

Brown Batting: Stannis Agita 70no, Lachlan Meikle 29no, Phillip English 21, Ryan Agita 16 and Ron Torr 14.

Brown Bowling: Ricky Hlevnjak 1-8, Lachlan Miller 1-5, Stannis Agita 1-14 and George Dalton 1-21.

A grade vs Saints – day 1

Our boys are halfway through their final fixture match against Saints at Endeavour Park. Saints batting first managed a modest all out 187 on a fairly slow outfield. Star of the day was skipper Patrick Hagenbach who managed to wrap up the innings with a hattrick. Despite the photo and caption in the Bulletin on Monday, Patrick wasn’t sending down thunderbolts. Bowling figures were S Cain 5-2-8-1: A Thomson 6-2-11-1: J Walsh 13-3-38-0 : B Stout 23-3-66-3: P Hagenbach 7.4-1-23-3: M Prien 12-2-35-2: Z Holm 1-0-1-0

At the close of play we were 0/10 in reply and 15 y/o Zac Holm took off his clown suit and replaced it with a jugglers’ costume (after 4 goes at holding a simple catch)

Reserve Grade will be chasing 265 for victory at Fred Jacobson Oval against Saints. Damien Meek 2/30, sean Death 2/75 & Luke Campbell 1/31 were the successful bowlers.

4th Grade No.2 finished their season off with another victory giving them bragging rights in that they have been undefeated in 2009. I was supposed to receive a match summary from them but the 3 wins in a row must have them too excited. I do know that Rob Keith excelled with a five wicket haul. We’ll have to wait until next week to see if the summary is forthcoming.

End of season presentation of trophies

Yes it is soon that time of year where we celebrate the enjoyment & achievement of the season. However, so that we can do this, we need all (junior & senior) perpetual trophies to be returned to the clubhouse urgently.

Planning has commenced for the Junior presentation of trophies and has been scheduled for Sunday 5th April (probably late afternoon). We hope to have full details soon, but put this on your calendar now!

The Senior Presentation of Trophies is also being planned at the moment and the preferred date is Friday 17th April at the Metropole Hotel (function room). Once again, put this on your calendar. This senior function is open to all members and interested junior parents.
