WebNews October 28th 2004
Sorry about the delay in this week's Wanderers WebNews but an out-of-town trip that I would have preferred to miss negated a Monday publishing. However, despite the ridiculous temperatures I had to endure, 40 C plus, I've made it home and I'll attempt to bring you all up to date.

On Saturday, our A Grade dismissed Saints for 209 and will bat this coming Saturday. We lost the toss on a beauty of a batting wicket & Saints decided to take advantage of a great batting strip. To restrict Saints to only 209 was a huge effort but our catching still needs some serious work as we once again dropped some vital catches and quite possibly could have had Saints out much earlier. Bowling figures follow; Matthew Castek 19-5-54-4, Lance Walsh 15.2-6-29-3, Shaun McCrystal 9-4-27-2 & Isaac Ling 12-1-24-1, Sean Bell 7-3-19-0, Sean Death 17-3-44-0. Leigh (Ming) Wiltshire had a very good day behind the stumps taking 3 catches & effecting 2 stumps, his display should hopefully produce much more confidence in his own ability and hopefully Leigh will continue to be amongst the catches & stumpings.

In Reserve Grade, Saints won the toss and sent us in. Batting - Darren Follington 0, Lyndon Camm 24, Ken Colder 61, Damien Meek 2, Andrew Thomson 4, Jamie Heit 26, Justin Tolley 7, Kingsley Grimshaw 24, Andrew Martel 4, Craig Hallett 23 and Shaun Moroney not out 4. Colder and Grimshaw had a partnership of 63 and gave us a decent innings to defend of 193 because we were 6 for 91 when they came together. 14 sundries - total batting of 193.
Saints innings started at 4.50pm.  Our bowling figures are as follows - Shaun Moroney none for 15 off 5 overs, Ken Colder 1 for 33 off 5 overs, Andrew Martel 1 for 13 off 6 overs, Andrew Thomson 3 for 19 off 5 overs and Jamie Heit none for 2 off 1 over, sundries 9. Total - 5 for 83 off 22 overs.
Thanks to stalwart scorer Pauline Wiltshire for the above information.

No report unfortunately on the 3rd Grade from last weekend.

4th Grade report follows thanks to Barrie Emanuel.
4th Grade were hosting Sub-Parks at Gill Park on Sunday. We won the toss and elected to bowl first. Subs made a patient start without losing a string of wickets early, which set them up for a bit of late hitting. We had a few ordinary overs, which help them reach a competitive total of 5 for 165.

We started the run chase well, but unfortunately we lost wickets on a very consistent basis, which gave them the confidence to shut us out of the game. The most disappointing part (other than the fact that we lost) was that a number of our batsmen made reasonable starts but then got ourselves out to ill disciplined shots on what was an excellent batting track.  We were bowled out for 135. A special thanks goes to a few of the guys who filled in for us, and especially to Stan Huen who like always, showed a huge amount of courage in the very warm conditions.  On a positive note the "Fine Tin" had a good day.

Surprise, surprise, surprise! We have now entered a second 4th Grade team into the TCI competition that will now negate the Bye. With an influx of senior & Under 16 players this season, a decision was made to enter this second 4th Grade team with the Under 16 players to be rotated through to give them the confidence of playing senior cricket.

No report from the mighty midgets - Under 10's. C'mon - surely someone can assist with submitting a report from these kid's matches, they are our future remember!

Bob Lawn has once again provided the Under 12 Blue report;
In the U/12 Blues, some quick re-organisation within the Club during the past week, accommodated by a revised draw at competition level, saw the emergence of two (marginally under-strength) Wanderers U/12 Blue teams: Wanderers Brown, coached by Anto Wilson and Wanderers White, coached by Paul Squires. Two U/10 players agreeing to play at the higher level, and at least one new player deciding to join on the promise of a game every week facilitated the split. Previously, with only the one team, the excess of players meant that it was difficult to give everyone a full game. Congratulations to everyone concerned, especially Penny, who liaised with Townsville Cricket to ensure the new team would be integrated into the competition.  And how did the new teams fare? At Pioneer Park, Wanderers Brown (4/123) went down to the Redbacks (1/178) on a dry outfield that got faster as the day went on. Top Wanderers batsman was former U/10 player Sam Rudge (19 ret.), who showed he was more than equal to the task at the higher level. Well done Sam. Jye Heytman (1 for 7) was the only Wanderers Brown to have any luck with the ball. Blair Wilson from the Gold team helped make up the numbers - thanks Blair. Despite the loss and the heat, everyone was enthusiastic and came off the field with a smile, which augurs well for the future.
As you can see, we now have two Under 12 Blue teams, as we did last season, so we'll be looking for someone from the new Under 12 Blue (Whites) to submit a brief report on each match.

Penny Hope has taken on the responsibility of providing weekly updates from the Under 12 Gold matches, thanks Penny, it is appreciated. Her first report for this season follows;
The U/12 Gold defeated Norths by 83 runs in a one-day match.
Some great batting from Liam Hope-Shackley 42, Jonty Durrheim 17, John Kirkby 21, Lachlan Kern 26, Zac Holm 26 Not out and Jack Ridley 13 Not out.
Some tight bowling had Norths 9/103 at stumps. John Kirkby 2/9, Jonty Durrheim 1/10, Zac Holm 2/7, Dylan Russell 1/14, Jacob Hope-Shackley 1/13, Lachlan Kern 1/14. The boys had a great improvement in the field and with the bat. Congratulations!

The Under 14 Gold team scorer Marilyn Milner has taken on the responsibility of providing WebNews reports (don't email them to Gweedo though Marilyn). Thanks Marilyn for your efforts in not only scoring but also providing the WebNews with the reports. We missed the last match report but Marilyn has kindly resubmitted it.

Saturday 9th saw the U14 Gold take to the field for the first time this season.  For two players, Todd and Daniel, it is their sixth season playing together.  Other familiar faces are Matthew, Matty, Ashley, Adrian and Emma. Welcome to the new players Peter, David, Sean and Brett.

Adrian Gertz won the toss and after examining the pitch, sent Redbacks into bat.  Some good bowling was let down by some very rusty fielding early on.  About half way through the afternoon the boys began to hold some catches and by the end of the afternoon, had Redbacks all out for 147.  Best bowling figures for the day were Sean Barrett (5, 4, 2, 5) and David Gray (6, 0, 2, 14).  Todd Milner took three catches.

Saturday 16th saw our turn to bat.  Our two openers made an excellent start.  Matthew Ahearn was caught, having made 47 off 69 balls.  Daniel Pearce had to retire on 75 balls, having made 34.  We all thought we were headed for victory.  Unfortunately our next 5 batters only managed to make 24 between them.  The score slowly crept forward and eventually got to 9 – 146.  We needed one to draw, 2 for a win.  Brett Hay then hit a 4, and Wanderers had won their opening game of the season.  We went on to make 183.
Well done to the strong tailend work by Peter Mansell, 13, Ashley O’Sullivan, 15, and Brett Hay, 20 not out.  And well done to Daniel who returned to the crease late in the afternoon and was eventually bowled for 53.

Having 20 minutes left to play both teams were looking for extra bonus points.  Wanderers faired slightly better, and at the close of play, Redbacks were 3 – 45.  Todd Milner was the best bowler in this session, taking 2 – 11.  He removed the Redbacks opener with an LBW decision on the first ball. Congratulations to all players.

U14 Gold23/10/04

After a good win for the first match of the season the team was not able to produce a win for the second game.  It was a one-day game and Brothers White was sent in to bat.  Our bowling was not up to the task and some on the Brothers team made quite a few runs.  After 35 overs we had them at 3 – 218.  Todd Milner (7-1-23-1) and Brett Hay (4-0-8-0) were the best of the bowlers.  Ashley O’Sullivan took a wicket and Emma Gurr made a stumping.

Our batters made a slow, but determined start.  Daniel Pearce again retired this week, having made 48.  Brett Hay, 27, Todd Milner, 35, Adrian Gertz, 34, all added valuable runs, and all with a strike rate around 100%.  We ended up at 6 – 168.

No report from unfortunately from the Under 16 Gold - please, can someone help us out with this age group?

The North Queensland Junior Cricket trials are being conducted this weekend and Wanderers would like to wish all our participants the best. If you are not involved this weekend, come along to the clubhouse and help out in the canteen and watch our A Grade in action from 1:00pm. We can use all the help we can get, as it will be a very busy weekend on both Saturday & Sunday in the canteen.

The Calcutta tickets are now on sale, if you haven't received your quota (15 tickets) to sell, please see Wilma at the canteen. If you have sold all your tickets, please hand them back in now and grab some more. We'll be looking for more junior parents to assist with selling these tickets too.

Friday nights at the Clubhouse with Have-A-Go and the $1 sausage sizzle is getting bigger every week. Don't forget that everyone is welcome with discounted stubbies all evening and even a happy-hour between 6:00 & 7:00pm.
