Greetings to our Wanderers family members.
It can’t get much bigger than having our favourite son Mitchell Johnson selected in the first Test against Sri Lanka at the Gabba. I’m sure every Wanderers family member is hoping that Mitch is in the team & will get his first chance to play Test cricket for Australia. Good luck Mitch, the whole of Wanderers, Townsville & I suspect Queensland is 100% behind you.
The next biggest thing is to offer up our congratulations to nine of our juniors who last weekend were announced in the North Queensland Junior Cricket teams. Congratulations to Ryan Agita, Jack Jeston, Matt Holm, Vivian Wolfinden – Under 12’s; Stanis Agita, Aaron Dooley – Under 13’s; Zac Holm – Under 14’s; Liam Hope-Shackley – Under 15’s; Matthew Ahern – Under 16’s. Well done fellas, we are very proud of you for your achievement and good luck at your respective State Championship.
Commencing tomorrow (Thursday) is the State Secondary U/15 State Championships in Townsville. Wanderers have Liam Hope-Shackley in the Northern team. We are hosting a match each day commencing at 9:30am. If you want to see Liam in action, he is playing at Endeavour 2 on Thursday, Endeavour 3 on Friday, at Gill Park (home) on Saturday, at the Willows on Sunday and on Monday it will be dependent on their placing. I must also pass on a big thank-you to Fred Jacobson, Matthew Castek (wicket & field) and to Pauline Wiltshire (canteen) for their efforts throughout the coming 5 days.
As mentioned in a previous WebNews, we are about to purchase a new bowling machine. We have decided to purchase a Bola brand, if anyone wants to look & see what its like, prior to delivery, you can check it out at http://www.bola.co.uk/cricket.html
You can now access all the senior & junior draws from our website (www.wandererscricket.com ) by clicking onto the “Draws” button. This also applies to the junior & senior rules that are located on the same page. In case you have not visited that page, there is also a map outlining the fields on Gill Park.
We recently received a few requests to supply club members’ phone numbers. Please be advised that Wanderers Cricket Club Inc., has a privacy policy and we will not divulge members’ phone numbers without their prior permission, even to other members. Please do not ask as refusal may offend.
The A Grade had a victory over Sub Parks, a victory that was not as sweet as it should have been. Poor fielding let us down and I feel that this is a direct consequence of minimal training by certain players. The A grade should be setting the example to the other Club members on the duration, quality & type of training done. I cannot fathom how supposed top-line players can say that 60 minutes of training will suffice each week.
Once again, this weekend, there is no senior matches due to representative cricket & the staging of the Secondary Schoolboys championship in Townsville. However, junior matches are back in full swing with those that normally play on turf being moved to astro. Should be an interesting weekend of junior cricket in Townsville this weekend.
I recently said that I would give you the profile of Assad Vala (Our first PNG scholarship holder) in a WebNews, so here it is. Assad has just turned 20.

Emmaus Benn showing brilliant skills in his bowling, with his 2 wickets he was set up for a hat trick better luck next time Emmaus keep up the good work.
All of the boys bowled well and their fielding was out standing making 10 runouts to total the fall of wickets to 18.
Also Congratulations to all the Wanderers Players who made the NQ teams.
That’s all for this week, good Cricketing.
Wanderers U10 Brown October 27th - contributed by Bob Lawn
Ten players took the field for Wanderers against Saints at Wulguru School, in a friendly-spirited game in which both coaches agreed to dispense with the tipsy-run rule. The players from both sides liked that decision. Saints ran out winners 8/119 compared to Wanderers 10/83, having outplayed Wanderers in most areas of the game and in both sessions of play. Wanderers were competitive with Saints in the bowling, conceding only 37 wides compared to Saints’ 42, and taking 5 wickets clean-bowled compared to 3 for Saints. However, Saints were much sharper in the field, taking 3 catches and effecting four run-outs. Wanderers often appeared half asleep in the field, with slow fielding, inaccurate returns of the ball and very ordinary catching – in all, 5 cans of coke were spilled.
Batting scores for Wanderers were Bradley Dean 15, Adam Matthews 5, Joshua Germon 5, Mark Land 5, Callum Lambert-Smith 5, and Ashley Baxter 3. Wicket takers for Wanderers were Bradley 2/6, Adam 1/7, Jameekah Howard 1/12, Joshua 1/12, Cathy Lawn 1/15 and Johann Schoeman 1/17. Callum took a catch in the field and Mark took a catch behind as keeper, both earning a can of coke from the Coach for their success. Jameekah effected our only run-out.
Wanderers Under 12 Brown had a bye this week but we were able to organise a scratch match with Wanderers Under 14 Blue players who also had a bye. Thank you to all those who assisted in organising the match. This was a game team mate against team mate, brother against brother. Much bragging and skiting was heard through-out…. much to the humour of the umpires.
The match was held on Gill Park 5 and players from both teams were inter-mixed into two (2) teams of nine (9). Each age group played to their own rules (eg under 12s couldn’t be out LBW or stumped but u/14 could). When older players were bowling to younger they had a limited run-up.
Jack O’Reilly was captain of one team and Andrew Squires captain of the other team. Andrew Squires won the toss and elected to bowl. O’Reilly’s team were off to a good start but Jack, as opener, was out in the 4th over and they found themselves 1-10. Jacks brother Zac lamented that he didn’t get a chance to sling a couple down because of Jacks early exit. Brendan Lund provided some good batting, including a fine four off a pull shot. At the end of the first 15 overs O’Reilly’s team was 2-69. The mainstays of that innings were Ronnie (cheeseburger)Torr with 21 and Stephen Squires with 22. The best of the bowlers at that stage were Riley Heaver, Luke Mills and Ryan Eaton.
Andrew Squires’ team had a solid opening partnership between Joshua Parkinson and Jack Gusmeroli before Jack was eventually out in the 8th over with the score then 1-26. Jack showed that he can dish it out as good as he got it by hitting some of the older bowlers into the out field. Luke Mills and Ryan Eaton then took over the batting along with Jack Carstens. Runs scored freely and at the end of 15 overs Squires team was 1-61. The best of the bowlers was Jack O’Reilly, Tori Lawn, Lachlan Miller and Nicholas Brehmer.
In O’Reilly’s team’s second stint at batting some more wickets were lost including that of Lachie Miller bowled by a Ryan Eaton off-cutter. This caused much amusement to everyone especially his team-mates. Andrew Squires tried hard to get his brother Stephen out but the umpire just couldn’t lift his finger on a hairline stumping chance. Nicholas Brehmer, Tori Lawn and Lachie Miller attributed runs to the score including a massive six (6) from Lachie Miler( He did get one in before having his castle knocked over). Kris Grant chimed in with a solid effort with the bat for five (5) runs and at the end of their 30 overs O’Reilly’s team was 6-120. Best of the bowlers was Ryan Eaton 2-11, Luke Mills 2-14 Jared Sinclair 1-9 and Jack Carstens 1-8.
This meant that Squires’ team needed to double their score to win the game. Riley Heaver gave immediate action to that task and scored a quick fire 23 with support from Zac Turner, five (5) not out, Jack Gusmeroli 17 and Ryan Eaton 23 not out. I believe we also saw Zac drive the ball down the pitch passed his brother who was bowling at the time!! Jared Sinclair was run out and was wished a happy Birthday by his Under 14 team-mates on the walk back. Wickets were hard to come by for O’Reilly’s team against an opposition of mainly under 12s. The run chase came down to the last over with Ryan Eaton and Luke Mills at the crease needing two (2) runs to win. Those runs were scored quickly for a very exciting win to Squires team finishing their overs at 3-122.
The best of the bowlers for O’Reilly’s team were Nicholas Brehmer with 1-11 and Lachie Miller with 1-18 and Jack O’Reilly 2-11. Stephen Squires was tight with 0-6 off four (4) overs.
The standard of fielding was quite high with some exceptionally good fielding by Brendan Lund and Ryan Eaton and some very strong throwing from the covers by Harry Broome. Andrew Squires took the catch of the match holding a screamer at backward square leg. Tori Lawn played the latest of late hook shots… hitting the keeper (Luke Mills) on the foot!! Luckily it was only his ego that was hurt.
Thank you to parents who brought their kids along for the scratch match, it was played in great spirit and with good humour.
This week the Wanderers showdown will happen in Under 12’s with the match between Under 12 Brown and Under 12 White.
See you all at training on Friday – contributed by David Eaton
