Wanderers Cricket Club
Greetings one & all to Wanderers WebNews with a special welcome to all our new subscribers following some spectacular results from our Sign-Ons.

Firstly, I would like to clear some housekeeping in relation to these Wanderers WebNews. They are scheduled to come out weekly during the season with match summaries being the main feature. We also use it as our major source of communication (there are some hard copies placed in the club each week for those who cannot access emails) and is an voluntary opt-in subscription. Should you prefer not to continue your subscription, you can at any time reply & request to be taken off the WebNews database. Another important point to look for with this edition is the possibility of a duplication of some of your email addresses. If you receive more than one copy of this WebNews, please reply & let us know as we have been combining the junior & senior databases over recent weeks.

Congratulations are in order to Liam Hope-Shackley for his recent selection in the North Queensland 14 y/o Secondary Schoolboys team. Also, a big moment for Emma Gurr today as she debuts for Qld U/19 Ladies team in a match at Allan Border Oval in Brisbane against New Zealand’s Ladies U/19 team, good luck Emma!

As you all must be aware, sponsors of amateur sporting clubs are hard to come by, so I would like to point out that one of our major sponsors is the Centenary Hotel who tonight & tomorrow night are holding the FRENCH STREET SEAFOOD FESTIVAL from 5pm till late. The inaugural festival was excellent and this one will feature Salt & Pepper Calamari, Oyster Shucking, Freshly Cooked Prawns, Sushi Rolling, Seafood Pizzas, Fish Filleting classes, Indian Curry Seafood, Live Entertainment, Live broadcast from 4TO and your chance to win $500 cash. Kids can play on the mammoth air pillow. Come along & enjoy to the Centenary Hotel, 35 French St., Pimlico – you are advised to book as this will be extremely popular – Ph: 4779 2575

Senior cricket commenced a few weeks ago and our overall results throughout the grades were rather disappointing, however, we did have quite a few of our top-flight players absent. Numbers are very healthy in the senior grades as we once again field 5 teams. All senior players should now have paid a minimum of $50 Sign-On fee (if not, your selections will be in jeopardy in the future as financial players will be given preference). A grade are at home for the next two Saturdays, so come along & enjoy the atmosphere each Saturday afternoon from 1:00pm.

Some of you may be aware that we are celebrating our 40th anniversary this season with a formal dinner on Easter Saturday 2008. If you know of anyone who played for Wanderers in the past, please get them to visit our website & register their interest. Our Website address is www.wandererscricket.com with our email address being info@wandererscricket.com

As mentioned earlier, these WebNews are designed to keep everyone in our great club informed of the latest news, if you have something useful you would like to share with others, please it to our email address and we’ll endeavour to include it. Also, once the juniors commence, I would like to think that we can receive a weekly match summary from each team for publication.

Due to heavy work commitments, I was unable to fully prepare the wicket over the past fortnight. I would like to thank Fred Jacobsen & Scott Breen for their assistance in making sure the wicket & outfield were prepared.

We are fortunate at Wanderers to have quite a few dedicated volunteers that get off their bums & put in the hard yards whether it be by scoring, coaching, managing teams etc., however we still need more! The senior side of the Club there is a scarcity of volunteers, with most of the work being done by about 4 people all over the age of 50 and who do not even play the game. We really need to see the players take some responsibility & become more involved, with this I mean players in the 20 – 35 age group. I speak from the heart when I say that you are burning out good people and if it continues, you’ll be left with a big hole to be filled. There’s plenty of areas that you can assist in, just ask and find out if you can be of service, every little bit helps tro lighten the load on those 4 old people.

Now, here comes the big one!

We are still searching for someone to take on looking after the canteen / bar. The Club has committed to paying someone an honorarium (to be negotiated) to look after this major fundraiser. It would be envisaged that you would not always be needed to physically be there as we are looking at rosters for Saturdays, the juniors do a remarkable job operating on Friday evenings so the majority of canteen work would be on Sundays. Ordering stock & reconciling the takings is part of the task but we maybe able to assist with getting the stock picked-up or delivered. If you think you could assist, please talk to President Peter Wiltshire to find out all the facts, phone him on 0429 192 194 – please, give this some thought.

Senior Raffle roster commences next weekend, Friday 5th October is 3rd Grade to assist from 5:00pm in the Public Bar at the Centenary Hotel, Sunday 7th October is A Grade to assist on Sunday from 12:30 in the public bar at the Centenary Hotel, in both cases, you will only be needed for about 60 minutes. The full roster will be placed on the Club’s notice board shortly.
